On Beauty

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

Cecil Frances Alexander

God is beauty! When you look around at the beauty of nature, it is hard to believe that this is a fallen world. Look at how beautiful some things are: A butterfly spreading its wings over a rose in the garden, a rainbow stretching out across a valley, or a young kitten at play. Then there are the other senses: The perfume of a flower, the caress of a gentle breeze, the notes of a harp, or the laughter of a child at play. All of these things speak to us of a God of beauty. Some scientists – on the other hand, would have us believe that we are nothing more than intelligent animals further along the great evolutionary scale… I’m sorry but they are not making a monkey out of me! When the man of science can conceive and create a living thing without first borrowing some materials from the Lord, then I might listen to them! Until such time, I will keep my faith in the God of creation, who creates in beauty what He conceives through love.
C.H Spurgeon said, “A little faith will bring your soul to heaven; a great faith will bring heaven to your soul.”

We all know the God of beauty, and we have had a small taste of the joy of His kingdom. The beauty of God is tangible, it draws us to Him like a magnet! Our hearts cry out to God as we sense His grace at work in our souls. We long for Him, our souls pine for Him. David wrote, “O God, Thou are my God, I seek Thee, my soul thirsts for Thee; my flesh faints for Thee, as in a dry and weary land where no water is.” (Psalm 63). It is the Spirit of God we yearn for, it is the Spirit of God that is the creative beauty. If we write a poem, sing a song, or paint a picture, it is the gift of God’s creative beauty at work within us.

Now if we think that this world is beautiful and displays the work of a God of love and beauty, then what will it be like when we see Heaven? St Paul says that no eye has seen, and no ear heard what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Cor 2:9). This world with all its beauty is still a fallen world, but Heaven is the dwelling place of Almighty God! Oh how we shall praise the God of beauty when we get to Heaven and see Him in all His glory. Oh, how blessed we are to know Him, and to be able to love Him. Let us give thanks to God for all His goodness towards us.

Eternal Father, we thank You for the gift of life, and for filling our lives with the beauty of Your Spirit. And especially for Your beautiful Son Jesus, through whom, one day, we shall all return to the loving embrace of Your arms. Amen.
