Many years ago, I was standing outside of a retail dept. store waiting for it to open. I started people watching and saw an older woman walking down the street. Her clothes were very worn but clean, and she was thin. Her graying hair was pulled back into a messy bun but one could see that she must have had blond hair when she was younger. Her face was very thin with flushed cheeks and had what some people used to refer to as “dancing blue eyes”. I always think back on her face as pleasant looking.
She caught me staring at her and so she started walking towards me. She came up to me and asked me if I could give her change for a cup of coffee. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the only bills I had on me….$3.00.
I had rushed out of the house earlier that morning and grabbed my credit card and the $3.00 for parking.
I gave her those $3.00 without thinking. She looked at me and said “thank you”. I said “you’re welcome” and with that she started to walk away. She was just a few feet away when she turned and came back to me and whispered “I’m really an angel you know, and I’ll always watch over you”. I said, “you are?” She said yes and with that she walked away again.
That’s when I realized I gave the angel my last $3.00 and now I didn’t have money to get my car out of the parking lot. In those days, there weren’t ATM machines and the credit card was only a store credit card, not something like a Visa, or Master Card.
I stood there wondering how the heck I was going to get home and started checking my pockets for a train ticket I might have when I put my hand in the same pocket from which I pulled the 3 bills I had given the angel. I found 3 $1.00 bills in that pocket! How did they get there?
