On Evolution

Greetings dear family of our beloved Saviour Jesus Christ, may the God who created us in His likeness confirm in us the dignity he has blessed us with, granting to us the sure knowledge that we are His children.

A little while ago there was a two-part programme on Channel 4 entitled, “The Enemies of Reason” by Prof Richard Dawkins. Part one, “Slaves to Superstition” was on as I wrote this letter; I did not watch it as I know it would be bad for my high blood pressure! He has followed this programme up with a book entitled “The God Delusion,” it is obvious from the title what the Prof thinks about faith.

I wonder if atheists like Prof Dawkins ever question why with so many millions of different species on this plant, human beings are the only ones with intelligence? It is very clear that we are the only intelligent species, which would mean that evolution did not do a very efficient job – one species out of many millions to achieve a state of intelligence is not much of an achievement is it? But it is not just our intelligence which makes us different; we also have a will, whereas animals only have instinct.

If you place three bowls of food in front of a dog, their instinct is to eat all three, because it does not know when it will eat again. If you put three dishes in front of a human, they will decide which one they would prefer and then put the rest in the fridge for another day. That is unless it is a female, in which case they would eat the one with the least calories and give the other two dishes to the dog!

The other thing I would like to know is, if evolution is right where are all the animals that are changing from one thing to another? I mean to say, a leopard never changes its spots from what I can see! I think that elephants will always make ‘trunk calls,’ snakes will always ‘speak with forked tongue,’ no one will ever ‘smile at a crocodile,’ cats will always have ‘nine lives,’ canine’s will always have a ‘dog’s life,’ Larry the lamb will always ‘get the chop,’ oh, and I expect chickens will always wonder which came first – the human or the microscopic organism!

No, I am sorry but the atheists have got it all wrong, when Prof Dawkins passes on to the next life I would love to be there to see his face when he comes face to face with God! I can just imagine it now, the Professor will still deny what is happening to him and put it all down to some kind of hallucination. When he eventually comes to turns with the fact that he has died and is standing before his creator, I very much expect the Father of Mercy to be compassionate with him. I think God’s words to him will be something like this: “Now then Richard, I know you have spent your whole life trying to persuade people that I don’t exist, well, I am not going to hold that against you. I am going to give you another chance to make amends by sending you back to earth to see if you can do better next time.”

At this the Professor will be very pleased indeed. Then God will deliver the punch line: “Yes, I am going to send you back; I am going to turn you into a microscopic organism, drop you in the ocean and let you try to work your way up!!!”

I could not help but make light of Prof Dawkins program, it is better than getting angry, he is always so forceful and disrespectful, I am told that even his peers do not like his approach.

On a more positive note, I would like to finish by saying, our God is an awesome God! He could have created us in any image of His choice so that He might ever appear superior to His creation, but He didn’t! He chose to create us in His own image, raising us up to such dignity as to be called His children. It is no wonder that some people have a problem with Jesus’ divinity. He was born in a stable, He lived in poverty, He suffered every kind of pain and humiliation that we could throw at Him, and He was humble. Just think about that – God is humble!

It is equally difficult for some to accept that God was born in the flesh, so that we might be born in the Spirit. That He lived in earthly poverty, that we might find heavenly riches, and that He suffered the torment of death, so that we might know the beatific life. These things are a mystery, but this is the God who said,

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8 & 9)

I wish I could tell the world how beautiful Jesus’ love is and how special He is. How can we explain the deep love that can be experienced by someone, from a God that they have never seen. Although none of us (as far as I know) have ever seen Jesus with the eyes of our bodies, I know that we have all seen Him with the eyes of our souls, and this is something that the unbeliever can never understand.

How do we, who know Jesus in our hearts, tell a world so lost in distractions, about the love, joy and peace experienced within the soul of a person in love with Jesus? The atheist like Prof Dawkins will tell us it is a delusion, a fantasy that is conjured up in the hope of finding a better life, and that this is our way of avoiding the fear and inevitability of death. The fact is that God cannot be understood by the mind unless we first experience Him within the heart, and we cannot do that unless we humble ourselves, open our hearts and receive Him in faith.

As someone once said: “I do not understand so that I may believe, but believe so that I may understand, for unless I first believe, I shall never understand!”
How do we make known the reality of the Holy Spirit living within us? People often question me as to how I endure my suffering with such a cheerful heart, I always tell them it is not I, but the grace of Christ within, and because of this, one of the things that causes me the greatest torment is not my ill health, but it is to see so many of my brothers and sisters in this world denying themselves of the joy of knowing Christ.

All I can do to ease this sorrow is to pray and have faith that God is merciful and will, in time, bring all of His children to the fullness of life. Prayer is powerful; many people are converted following the faithful and persistent prayers of family or friends. God uses our prayers to work in the lives of others, to open doors, bridge gaps and gently call them to the wonder of His love. We do not have to be great speakers, or clever theologians, we can all make known the reality of the Holy Spirit living within us by leading quiet, gentle, thoughtful lives. We are not working alone, we are working with and for, Jesus, and He will use us in ways we least expect, to glorify Him and bring the joy of His love to others.

As for the creation of the Universe, the Bible tells us that God created it through His will, out of nothing. (Rev 4:11) God did not need pre-existent matter to create it, He is Omnipotent, but there will always be questions: My son asked me the other day, “If God created everything who created God?” I could only give him the theological answer of the church: “God has always existed; there was never a time in which God did not exist!” We cannot fully understand these things. God is a mystery, He is also infinite, and we only have a finite mind. God may not appear real to some people like Prof Dawkins, but to me … I can only repeat the words of St Augustine,

“God is higher than my highest, and more inward than my inner most self!”

Evolution, Fact or Fiction? By John Watts

The so-called ‘Period of Enlightenment’, which started in the 18th Century, advocated that everything was explained by reason; therefore science was superior to any philosophy. When Charles Darwin published his Origin of the Species in 1859, atheists immediately adopted the ideas to prove the non-existence of God. This was despite the doubts that Darwin had regarding certain aspects of his ‘Theory of Evolution’ especially with regard to intermediate stages between species and also the development of new organs especially the eye.

Despite these doubts, which Darwin hoped would be answered over the years ahead, no such evidence has been forthcoming. In fact despite the vast accumulation of fossils, there is less evidence now that there was in the 19th Century mainly because some has lost it’s original authentication.
Despite being faced with these issues, today’s atheists are anxious that any possible belief in God is disproved. Therefore they go to any lengths to produced so called evidence of evolution. This has even involved the falsification of fossils and other remains to appear to be ‘missing links’.

It is quite clear that if evidence of evolution is discovered it would really prove the non-existence of God. However I am confident that that no such evidence will be discovered for two reasons. Firstly, I have personal experience of God in my life but this would never be accepted by atheists as evidence and secondly because macroevolution, the changing of one species into another is impossible.

Evolutionists claim that all life can be traced back to a common source although they cannot explain how that source came into being in the first place although many have tried. In the lowest form of life, the DNA for that creature holds the DNA for that creature alone and no other. Therefore any advance towards another species would involve the development of further DNA code to develop new cells and features. This development happens by pure chance caused by mutation and ultimately this same process will develop into other appendages such as arms and legs.

It is a fact that most mutations, over 99% are detrimental to the offspring, therefore, according to the theory, the bad ones die out and the successful mutations survive to adapt to the surroundings. Because this happens with so few good mutations, the process can take many millions of years. Despite this there are no intermediate stages in the fossil record. I think it takes an extraordinary amount of faith to believe that every part of all living creatures have developed by chance. A cursory inspection of any species shows a remarkable degree of design. In some instances there would have to be a number of simultaneous mutations for example to develop an eye, the blood vessels and nerves including the optic nerve and also receptors in the brain to make sense of the image.

It is strange that after millions of years there is no sign of humans developing into anything better. The motivation behind the present support of the Theory of Evolution is to prove the non-existence of God. This is shown clearly in the recent book by Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion. No Christian should accept the teaching of evolution because it simply isn’t true but it is important that we are fully aware of the scientific arguments otherwise we have no chance of being heard.

“For these reasons the Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter.” -Pope Pius XII (Humani Generis)

Sed Contra: This is an incomplete portion of this very point of Humani Generis (36). If you read this point of Humani Generis you will find that ONLY research and discussion about this topic is granted to TWO GROUPS: sacred theologians and human scientists with a GRAVE warning:

“Some however, rashly transgress this liberty of discussion, when they act as if the origin of the human body from pre-existing and living matter were already completely certain and proved by the facts which have been discovered up to now and by reasoning on those facts, and as if there were nothing in the sources of divine revelation which demands the greatest moderation and caution in this question.”

If you’re not a sacred theologian or a human scientist, you pretty much have to accept the historic position of the Church (Creationism) with docility.

And don’t expect this to change from the traditional teaching. Just before Pope Paul VI condemned contraception he received pro and con argumentation on that issue to. The Church is not afraid of research.

Bottom line: Evolution is a religion and has no basis in science. The Church will show this is the case. But we need the proper research to take place. At present this has been done only to a woefully limited degree.

    God bless you.
